Color Me Bad

b

Today more and more women of color are experimenting with hair color, and looking great. The color of your locks can greatly change the way you look. When choosing a color, be sure that it will go nicely with your complexion.

In the 1950’s Etta James was daring w/ her platinum blond hair. Now it’s not uncommon to see African Americans with blond hair. This color looks best on fair skin. Brown skin looks awesome with a darker, more golden shade of blond. But now the key to pulling of any shade of blond hair is the color of your eyebrows. Make sure your brows are not drastically darker than your hair.

Keep in mind that the lighter you want your hair to be, the harsher the chemicals will be. If you already use relaxers or any other type of chemical treatment on your hair you should be cautious of going too light, in order to prevent damage. Regardless of your color, always be sure to use a color protecting shampoo to prevent fading, and moisturize.

Red hair is the hardest to maintain. It fades the quickest when shampooing and from sunlight. Bright reds go well with fair skin. Brown and dark skin should try burgundy and more brownish reds.

If you’re not ready to commit to a full head of color you can always try highlights or try the color block trend. The color block is when you die only a portion of your hair. It could be the back half of your head, middle section of the front of your head, etc. This looks good on just about any complexion. You can go as light as you want. A lot of dark skin women have jet black hair with a blond color block, and it looks fierce!

With all these great colors to experiment with there’s nothing like black hair. Just like that “little black dress” it never goes out of style. So don’t think your hair is boring if it’s black. It looks great on all complexions, and it will always be “in”!
