Days 13 & 14: Dream Traveling and Memories

I ended up not doing my challenge blog yesterday (bad me!), so I'm doing two today to get caught up.
Click HERE to see the full list of topics.

Day 13: Somewhere you'd like to move or visit
Well, there are lots of places I'd like to visit, but not very many of them would I want to move to. So I'm separating these into two categories.

Somewhere I'd like to move:
Even though the people there aren't exactly the nicest, I would really love to live in France. On my trip there this summer I got to see Paris for a few days, and the rest of the 2 weeks was spent in Dijon. Dijon is in the middle of wine country, so as soon as you leave the city you are surrounded by vineyards. Gorgeous!
I would love to live in one of the smaller towns outside of Dijon. The houses there are so beautiful and really unique (at least by American standards). If I ever did move to France, though, it would be like at retirement age.

Somewhere I'd Like to Visit:
Oh I could never pick just one! I'll limit myself to four.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
There is a direct flight that goes from the airport in Portland right to Amsterdam, so one of these days I may just hitch-hike my way up to the airport and hop on a plane and go! When I went to France we had to change planes in Amsterdam, and any city that looks that cool from the air has got to be totally awesome.

Cape Town, South Africa
I need to go so South Africa to find a guy to marry because South Africans have the coolest accent ever. Have you seen District 9? If not, you should! Even if you don't like alien movies, you have to see it just for the accents!

New Zealand
No, I do not want to go hike to Mordor like a LOTR nerd. I want to go see the Milford Sound!

Santorini, Greece
If I decided to have a destination wedding I'd go to Santorini. The white houses all clustered together overlooking the insanely blue water? Swoooon.

OK, enough of that.
Day 14: Your earliest memory.
I don't remember very much from living in Australia for a year, but I was only 3 when we went there so the memories I do have would probably be my earliest. Obviously I don't remember what happened first, but I do remember being scared of an emu (hey, its beak looked pokey!), baking play-dough in the oven, and little green caterpillar-y things on Fiji. Wow, great memories, I know.

A WEEKEND RECAP in SIGNS

I had an absolute BLAST over Thanksgiving weekend.

Sorry that it has taken me so long to blog about the weekend... as soon as I got back to GA I had to go into work mode--things are crazy; packing, working, holiday stuff, life in general... you know.
Consider today's post the beginning of my recap of my AMAZING Thanksgiving weekend vacation in Florida--Better late than never!

-----------------

Hands down, this Thanksgiving was the best that I have had in a very long time.
There was no drama, no family fighting, no bullshit.
The food was delicious, the company was wonderful, and the entire weekend was just perfect.
I couldn't have asked for a better vacation/turkey break.

Now with the mushy, gushy stuff out of the way. Please take a moment to appreciate my long weekend in signs.

"Signs?"
"What the hell are you talking about Chuck?!"
--that's what you're saying right now.

Well readers, when I say signs this is what I mean:

In Florida, you are not supposed to

Well duh?!

Haha this made me chuckle...
[via]

I liked this one a lot. No words necessary. Just about the coolest sign I've ever seen.
They were everywhere I went.

WANNA SEE SOMETHING CUTE

...or scary depending on your outlook:

Yup,
That's me...

Circa 19-90 something, wearing my first, and ONLY, princess costume thanks to my Gma Dana.
I really, really wanted a princess costume.
Apparently I refused to take this thing off--I wore this bitch all day (and night) long.

Sometimes I love me :)

UPS MAKES ME LAUGH

Today I inadvertently caused a UPS driver to drive past me, stop his truck in the middle of the road, reverse his truck 100ft so that he was even with my car (parked on the side of the road), and say to me: "I just had to say: You go girl".

I said thanks, he then smiled, we both laughed, and he drove away.

At first I thought he was my friend M Dab from my old school pizza making days who now drives for UPS. Then I remembered that I was in Georgia, NOT in Towson, Maryland where M Dab works. Then I thought he was going to tell me that he knew M Dab in some way and that he was saying hi from him to me, but that didn't happen either.

He just told me "You go girl" and drove away.

After he drove away I chuckled some more. Then I said to myself: "They hire pretty fuckin' cool people to drive UPS trucks... that guy and M Dab are definitely two of them!!!!"

[Note: This is NOT the UPS guy... just a picture of one I found online.]

I have NO CLUE what caused him to stop. I had just walked from the restaurant to my car, which was parked right down the street. Maybe he liked what he saw from my walk from the front door to the car door. [har har]

Who knows?!

All I know is I cracked up the entire 5 minute ride from work to the hair salon replaying what he said to me.

"You go girl"

MEMORIES of GREEN

Right at this moment 2 years ago I was with an amazing friend, sharing in the hospitality and home of a wonderful couple (expecting their first baby), enjoying amazing a week of rainy and clear weather, drinking FRESH Guinness (yes, there is a difference) and delicious Magners Cider in Ireland.

[SB and I in Dublin]

[The Cliffs of Moher]

[The Cliffs of Moher]

Looking back to two years ago my life was very different. My values were different. Who I considered important in my life was different. I was truly a different person back then.

I definitely like where I am now. I like what I know now, versus two years ago.
I most definitely I like who I am now.

Today I am a college graduate looking for a real job.
I'm a girl trying to finally break free of the safety of home.
I'm a woman enjoying the pleasures of a new relationship.
I'm an aunt (x's 4).
I'm a friend.
AND
I'm truly happier than I've ever been before.

With that being said:

Happy Anniversary to my passport
and to my first cross the big ocean trip!

UH-UH's FLASHBACK FRIDAY [iv]

I love me some boots!

It's a problem.

Really.
And like the wonderful members of Alcoholics Anonymous say:

Admitting your problem is the first step to recovery.

Hello.

My name is Chuck and I am addicted to boots.

My name is Chuck and my Uh-Uh has some wicked taste in clothing and in accessories, especially shoes.

My name is Chuck and my Uh-Uh loves me so much that she gave me two pairs of her boots.
[These are the brown.. the black are in the same condition, but without the harness strap at the ankle]

My name is Chuck and I am now the proud owner of two pairs of VINTAGE Brazilian made short leather boots.
[well I got them 2 years ago, but you get it]

My name is Chuck and my Uh-Uh and I walk the same way.
[We are heavy heel walkers and toe scrapers...]

My name is Chuck and I am GLAD AS HELL that my Uh-Uh and I wear the same size shoes.
[Size 11 Hollar!]

My name is Chuck and I heart my Uh-Uh.

The End.

UH-UH's FLASHBACK FRIDAY [iii]

Once upon a time there was a woman name Uh-Uh.
Uh-Uh liked to glam it up.
Uh-Uh liked to shop.
Uh-Uh had a strong appreciation for the color white.

Some of you may disagree with me and my Uh-Uh about white not being a color and instead a hue... BUT once you set foot in my Uh-Uh's [old] Condo or raid her wardrobe you will be a white-as-a-color converted individual.

Please excuse my ramblings if they don't make one bit of sense this evening. I'm working off of 4 hours of sleep between the past 48hrs [all my own fault and completely WORTH it, and also the reason why this Flashback is on Saturday evening and not on Friday... my bad.]

Back to the business of my Uh-Uh liking the color white:
My Uh-Uh lived in a white walled Condo with white carpets and white couches and white linens.
Everything was WHITE.
But everything sparkled. There were large windows and lights in every room. When I would visit I would always get in trouble for turning all of her lights on in her house. I loved the way her spot lights on the ceiling would make the items in her china cabinets shine.

The shining and the lights and the white-ness of everything in her house is one of the main reasons why I was so drawn to the item of today's flashback.

The white (more creamy colored with age, wear, and old stains) of this dress reminded me so much of my Uh-Uh. Yes, I know the dress belonged to her, so obviously it will remind me of her, but it's more so the White-ness of it, the flow of it, the elegance and air around the dress.

It screams Uh-Uh.
[In the good way of course]

Now, on with the show:

[My Uh-Uh liked her white dresses]

[My Uh-Uh liked to alter her clothing... this dress was pinned in the front. She obviously didn't want to show the world her 'goodies'--My Uh-Uh is a classy lady.]

[Here is a close up--as close as I can get with my busted camera--the dress is silky, pleated (all OVER), and has this added belt to cinch the waist.]

[Here is the back...]

[This is NOT how my Uh-Uh would parade around... not with her lacy slip showing to the world--no siree-bob.]

[I pulled the back down on the dress, pulled up the waist to make it more empire. I like both ways.]

[These are my Uh-Uh's boots... I confiscated them a few years back. My Uh-Uh was a stylish lady back in her day!]

[More of Uh-Uh's dress and her boots! Hollar!]

If you don't know what next week's Flashback is about:

Boots!

I love me some boots! And so did my Uh-Uh!

:)

UH-UH's FLASHBACK FRIDAY [ii]

My Uh-Uh liked to read.

Both her old home (the CONDO) and the home that she lived in and passed down to my Aunt and Uncle (the one in which I currently live in today) were filled from the ceiling to the floor with books. Books on the walls, books in nooks & crannies, books in boxes... Books everywhere.

Some of my first memories of books and of reading are those that involve both of my grandmothers. I credit both of them with instilling in me the love that I have for the written word, for classic literature, and for the pure joy that comes from reading a good story.

I might not have the ability to express my words and feelings like some can with the written word, but often times I find it easier to express my feelings through writing than I do expressing them verbally. This is because of my grandmothers.

This is because my Uh-Uh loved to read me stories.

It's because her glass coffee table with it's giant gold claw footed legs was always covered with stacks of library books every time I came to visit. It's because she often stayed up past the witching hour reading. Sitting in the corner of her large white couch with a book and a blanket to keep her feet warm while she read.

It's because of my Uh-Uh that I finally broke down and opened a copy of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. While moving her out of the CONDO I grabbed a few of her old books before they were discarded into the Goodwill bin. AND can I just say: Thank Goodness that I did this.

Hands DOWN! This book, and might I add that I am only 200+ pages into it's 1000 pages, is the BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ IN MY LIFE! A novel has never made me think as much as this book has. Written in the 50's and being read by me in the grand 'ole year of 2010, I find myself thinking about things--life, the world, human nature, respect, work ethic, love, politics, EVERYTHING--more than I ever have before. With this book I find that my eyes have been opened to so much more. I always hated AP English in high school because of the BS surrounding breaking down novels, symbolism, allusions, imagery, etc., but this book changes everything for me! If you have not yet had a chance to read this book. Do so please. Put it on your list. Seriously.

Now back to the Flashback part of Uh-Uh's Flashback Friday:

I was about 50 some odd pages into Atlas Shrugged when I had this thought (I jotted it down on a paper bag so that I could share this with you...):
"Sitting here reading one of her books, knowing that at some point my Uh-Uh was doing this exact same thing, maybe in the same position as I'm in now puts me in a comfortable state of peace.
She and I are awfully alike.
I admire her greatly. Her will, her self-importance, her overall strength of character, who she was, what she overcame, what she grew into, and what she became.
I respect her greatly..."
... and to finish that though now: and I miss her greatly.

Thanks to this book... I felt a little bit closer to my Uh-Uh. Can a book really do that?

It's a secret (well not so secret anymore) of mine to one day do all that she has done (in my own way of course). She and I are two very different women, yet as I said before, we are alike in so many ways.

My Uh-Uh loved to travel. It is my hope one day to visit all of the places that she did. To see them, experience them, and remember them. I don't want to grow up to be her... I want to be my own woman one day, but I have every intention of achieving what she did and of being as strong as she was/is... every intention of respecting her, remembering her, and honoring her.

THe photo upload was not working... I'll update this with pictures on Sunday when I get back.

UH-UH's FLASHBACK FRIDAY [i]

I found this on my computer. I wrote it about a year ago:

My Grandmother is dying.
Everyday she loses a piece of herself. Bit by bit her life is being taken from her, and there is absolutely nothing she nor we, her family, can do to help her.

It's sad and it's true.
My grandmother has Alzheimers. She is no longer the woman I grew up loving and admiring. This is very sad to say BUT it is very honest and very true. Some days I see the woman who used to inhabit her body, and other days I am forced to stare at a woman who I no longer know, one who I think does not even know herself.

[Uh-Uh and I -- 2007]
If she find's out I put a picture of her up without her make-up on she WILL KILL ME--Alzheimers or no--she'd cut a bitch if she found out.
[oh and excuse the squinty eye syndrome that I've got goin' on--it's a problem sometimes]

The Story of Uh-Uh:

We call my grandmother Uh-Uh.

Yes, like when you tell a child "Uh-uh, don't touch that, no, no." That's where my Uh-Uh's name came from. No we don't call her Maw-Maw, or Mum-Mum, or Ni-Ni, or Nana. Sometimes we squeeze a Granny in here or there, but to everyone in my immediate family, and amusingly to many of my friends, my grandmother is called Uh-Uh.

When my cousin T [the first of the four cousins] was born my grandmother would often watch T at her condo--it's more like a townhouse, but if you knew my Uh-Uh you would say she lived in a CONDO too... it's more fancy-schmancy when you say Condo versus saying Townhouse, and my Uh-Uh is not a normal woman who resides in an ordinary Townhouse.

So getting back to the story:

Grandmother [cuz she's not been named "Uh-Uh" yet] liked (and still does like) things. She collects and buys things. Now these things are not just knick-knacks and woo-has, these are nice things. Like china, and vases, and antiques, and other extravagant items from her travels around the world (yes, the woman traveled AROUND THE FRIGGIN WORLD--I'm jealous too).

Well cousin T was a grabby baby, and since she was the first baby born [of the four cousins] she got it all, and "No" was not in her vocabulary. Upon arrival to grandmothers home cousin T had to unfortunately learn "No" the hard way. Grandmothers house was never baby/toddler proof, and to the day we moved her out, over 20 years later, it never was made to be baby/toddler proof. In order to save her lovely priceless items, grandmother had to tell cousin T "Uh-uh, don't touch that--No, no, you can't play with that" an awful lot.

Upon a visit to grandmothers house, Aunt R with baby/toddler cousin T in tow met grandmother at the door. Grandmother greeted them with a "Hello!," and cousin T greeted grandmother with a "Hi Uh-Uh!" And so the name stuck.

After telling the poor, touchy child "uh-uh" so many times, the phrase turned into a name, and the stuck with all four of the grandkids.

So, when I talk about my Uh-Uh you know that I'm talkin' about my granny. My much loved, much missed, yet still around, but not all that much the same woman she mentally used to be, Alzheimers stricken grandmother.

And NOW!

Are you ready?!

It's the first installment of Uh-Uh's Flashback Friday!

Does your Grandma Blazer smell like mothballs?

Because mine does!
[Ack!]

A close-up of the Grandma Blazer.
It's a great brown tweed blazer with black lining around the collar and above the pockets.
My Uh-Uh and I are very much alike in many ways--especially in our clothing sizes (but thank JESUS not in our shoe sizes--she wears a 12, I lucked out with an 11)--YAY Vintage clothes in good/near mint minus the mothball smell condition!!!

Do you see my shoulder pads?!
I need to take this to the tailor and get them REMOVED! I have enough shoulders for this blazer without the added help from the 80's shoulder pads.

More of a close up...
Do you flip the collar of your Grandma Blazer? I sure as hell hope not because that look is LAME!

That ends today's flashback. Check back next Friday and each Friday after that for more of Uh-Uh's Flashback Friday fun!! And for more memories and stories and old pictures from the Uh-Uh archives!

THIS IS MY NEW YEAR... on crack.

Does anyone else remember the "2000" glasses that were around for Y2K and 1999 NYE?? Because I sure do. My pair glowed in the dark and were passed out during a NYE party during my middle school days in Nevada.

Between 2000 and tonight, the night before 2010, my life has definitely had some changes.

2001: I decided to leave my mother and my home in order to have the opportunity for a better life.

2005: I improved my grades, (for the first time) made amazing life-long friends, successfully graduated high school and was accepted into college.

2005-2009: I attended college, began playing rugby, made even more 'keeper' friends, fell in love, found out who my true friends were, was accepted into a new family, welcomed a new set in in-laws, decided to postpone graduate school for a 'real' job, and had my heart broken.

2010: Will bring my graduation from college (Jan. 10) and will begin the start of a new chapter in my life. One that will hopefully lead to a new career and the completion of the goals that I set for myself so long ago.

This evening I will be spending the night alone.
No parties, no more boyfriend, and no friends tonight.
Kind of lame... no, really it is lame. But I'm okay it with it. I'm going to finally sit back and truly relax. I've spend the last 8 years (since moving to Maryland) working my ass off to get this far. Tonight will be my break. Tomorrow I will begin the next part of my life and I plan on enjoying it every step of the way.

This year:
January has me graduating. Going on a ski trip (for the first time) with friends from home. Possibly going on a 2 day trip to Vegas with my cop friends or just another over night-er to Atlantic City.
February I start a new job, not a 'real job just an in-between job, close to home. Then I'm going (possibly back) to Vegas for a 4 day weekend of out of control, craziness with my rugby team for the USA 7's tournament. I'm going to catch up with the only 2 friends I've kept from NV. And I plan on having the time of my life with a bunch of amazing ladies--an enjoying the eye-candy that are sexy rugby men (haha)!
I don't know what I have in store for March, April, May, or June, but July is my Birthday and August is bringing my brother and his wife baby #2 (child #4). (I'm planning on it being a girl. It better be a girl.)
I really just hope that this year, and the years following the end of my undergraduate/college career will be good. I just want to be happy. That's all I've ever really asked for, and that's what my resolution this year will be.

I just want to be happy.

If I were on stage in a Miss America Pageant I'd wish for World Peace too.

:)

Have a Happy New Year everyone.
Be safe.

Chuck.
