Today's history lesson:
Oregon was admitted into the United States on February 14th, 1859 and was the 33rd state.
I bet you didn't know that! (I didn't either until I looked in up on Wikipedia).
I complain about Oregon a lot, but I really do love this state. Yeah, it rains like all the time here, but it's really gorgeous and there are lots of fun things to go see and do. So happy birthday, Oregon! I love you!
On Saturday I got to spend the evening in the coolest city in Oregon: Portland! I got off work early and my parents and I went up to have dinner at an Italian restaurant there called Porto Terra. My tummy was in a serious battle with the waistband of my skirt by the time we left.
After dinner I got to go to the brand new H&M, the very first H&M in Oregon! It was jam packed with people, which I don't like, so I didn't stay long but did pick up a few goodies before I left.
After my brief shopping trip we headed off to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, which is beautiful and has that old-school opera hall feel to it. Guess who is going to be playing there on the 19th? The Decemberists! Maybe I will skip work and hitchhike to Portland to see them... or maybe not.
Anyways, the reason that we were there was to watch The Screwtape Letters, the theatrical presentation of C.S. Lewis' book by the same name (he wrote the Chronicles of Narnia, for those that aren't familiar with him). The play was awesome. It's really interesting because there is only one speaking part in the whole 90-minute play, and only 2 characters total. The actor (Max Mclean) that portrayed Screwtape did an excellent job and I can't even imagine the amount of work that he had to put in to memorize that entire script. After the play he came out and did a brief question and answer session, and he said he's been doing the play since 2006, so I guess by now he can probably say the entire script in his sleep, but still, it's just kind of mind boggling.
All in all, a great Saturday! A bit of work, a fabulous dinner, a touch of shopping, and an excellent play to finish off the trip.
Oh wait, technically the end of the trip was our stop at McDonald's to get me some coffee. It was past 10pm so nothing else was open. The mocha was, much to my surprise, not terrible. Not great, but not bad either. Good job Micky-D's!
