The holidays are just around the corner, and you might be wondering what the beautiful, stylish woman in your life might like for the upcoming holiday(s). Whether she is your friend, mother, girlfriend, wife or daughter, she deserves a gift that is special and thoughtful. Here is a short list of gift ideas for the style-conscious woman (in no order).
* Stylish trench coat
Trench coats look great on most women. They look classy and stylish.
* Scarf with a beautiful brooch (pin)
A scarf with a brooch adds flavor to any outfit.
* Pearl necklace
Every stylish woman should have a strand of pearls. Classics and trends can blend beautifully to create a style that is unique to each woman.
* Diamond stud earrings
These are a staple in a woman's "jewelry box."
* Spa/salon gift certificate/ appointment
Every woman deserves some time for herself to relax and enjoy being a woman.
* A beautiful dress and/or heels (IF and only if you know her true size(s)... enough said.)
*A gift basket of relaxation items and/or items that she will find fun and/or useful (like chocolates, coffees, scrapbooking items, accessories, shoe inserts, oil burner with oils, candles, a cute robe, slippers, etc.).
*A new magazine subscription to Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Elle, Vogue, Lucky, TIME, etc. (This depends on her interests, of course.)
Good luck, and enjoy the holidays!!! :)

Fall 2008 Fashion
Leaves are falling, and we are falling in love...
...with the fall '08 trends including but not limited to dark, opaque tights, lace, jewel tones and black, tights with peep-toe heels, boots, booties, "shooties", peep-toe booties and SOOO much more...
Trends come and go quickly. Some trends are 'out' after only one season, so keep this in mind before you spend your hard-earned cash on trend-only items. I recommend finding and only purchasing clothes that look fabulous on you, not just on the rack and/or the runway. Also, only wear what you feel comfortable with because confidence can make or break any outfit. Looking and feeling fabulous are extremely important! :)
Have fun with the new fall trends, and remember to incorporate the classics into your wardrobe as well.

Women's Wardrobe Basics
We all have different styles, preferences and favorite colors. And, of course, we all have different lifestyles, priorities and "jobs" (stay-at-home moms definitely included). That being said, the following wardrobe basics are fairly general, and almost every wardrobe style can benefit from including the following items. This list is not exhaustive but contains some of the items that you "should-get-if-you-don't-already-have."
14. Fitted, black blazer (or any color for that matter, really depends upon your taste and style)
13. Longer, sexy, fitted, solid color T-shirts (and tanks if you feel comfortable- These are both great because they can be dressed up or down.)
12. Accessories that coordinate with your unique style (Use accessories to enhance, not distract from, you and your outfit.)
11. Sexy, yet comfortable, undergarments (If you feel sexy about what is going on underneath your clothes, then you are going to feel that much more confident about everything else.)
10. Red heels (Red is a fabulous color and the color of confidence. I also recommend including black and brown heels in your collection. If you like wearing heels, let your imagination free to find all sorts of alluring colors. (I recommend http://www.cutesygirl.com if you are on a tight budget.)
9. Comfortable yet stylish flats (or dressier wedges) in neutral colors
8. Sexy, stylish 'trench coat' in a solid color (black, charcoal, cream, dark khaki, etc.)
7. At least one "Little Black Dress" (I have many LBDs because black dresses look classy, sexy, sophisticated and are perfect for almost any occasion.)
6. Pencil skirts in solid colors and/or A-line skirts (If you do not already wear skirts, what is keeping you from wearing them? If you would like to start, find the skirt style(s) that fits and flatters your body. You can choose from so many styles, cuts and colors out there. You are bound to find at least one skirt that looks and feels great on you. Hopefully, you will find many!)
5. At least 1 coordinating, tailored pants or skirt suit/ensemble (Even if you are not an executive/ professional... you never know when you will need to appear even more pulled together and professional than usual, i..e. jury duty, an interview, a funeral (if your LBD is too little or revealing), going to the bank for an important loan, etc.)
4. Dress pants in neutral colors and black
3. Fitted dark jeans (Jeans come in MANY cuts/styles/colors so you may not find the perfect pair right away. Stay positive! You will find a pair that look made for you. Keep in mind, you may try on 20 or more pairs of jeans before you find the right cut/style/color right for your body.)
2. Crisp, white, collared, long sleeve button-up shirt (This shirt can be worn so many ways.)
1. Your amazing smile (Your smile is the most important piece to the style puzzle.)
***Remember to invest in pieces that you can mix and match, pieces that coordinate with the rest of your wardrobe and pieces that are consistent with your style/ representation of yourself.
Have fun, and pamper yourself!

Save Time For Yourself
We are all busy in our own ways. Some of us are busy stay-at-home moms. Some of us are busy executives at huge corporations (and moms). Some of us are busy business owners (and moms). And some of us are so busy we lose track of time, do not get enough sleep and/or do not make enough time for ourselves. We all have busy lives, but we still need to be pampered. Most of us do not take enough time for ourselves. It is time to change that! You are an incredible, hard-working woman, and you deserve some time for yourself.
Here are a few time-saving tips to help allow for some increased pampering time for yourself. You deserve it!
1. Pick out your outfits (down to accessories and shoes) the weekend before the week ahead. This will save you so much time each morning (or at each night if that is when you used to pick out your outfits). Set aside space in your closet to put the week's worth of outfits. Try using a sachet bag for the jewelry that coordinates with each outfit. *This is also great for traveling so you can keep your whole outfit together. Shoe bags are also great for this purpose.
2. If you have kids (especially preteens), have them pick out their outfits ahead of time also. This way they can enjoy picking out their outfits, AND you get to approve/disapprove of the outfits beforehand. Not only does this save you time each morning, it may also save you the hassle of getting your kids to dress appropriately each morning (if this is even an issue for you).
3. If you usually cook dinner, try using a Crock*Pot. Talk about amazing. You can put together dinner in 10 minutes or less in the morning, place in the Crock*Pot and go about your busy day. After your long, hard day, when you are tired, all you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the amazing dinner you already prepared. Let someone else or the dishwasher do the dishes. :)
4. If you do have kids, leave them with their dad (if possible) OR hire a babysitter (or ask a relative, close neighbor, etc. to watch your kids) for a couple of hours (even just one hour) to allow you time for yourself to read, soak in a bath, get a manicure, organize your closet, workout, go for lunch with your girlfriends, take a breather or do whatever it is that relaxes you. I recommend doing this at least once a month, ideally once a week. Your kids do need you, but you need time for yourself as well. You will feel so much happier when you get the much needed time to yourself.
5. When do you shop for groceries (or run other errands)?
Many grocery stores are open 24 hours. Try shopping earlier in the morning or later at night when your kids are asleep (and someone else is watching your sleeping angels). If you want to avoid shopping early in the morning or late at night, try shopping during the weekday when your kids are at school, at after-school activities or at a friend's house. If you work out of the home during the day and your schedule permits, try shopping during your lunch break. This will allow you time to shop by yourself (which should speed things up a bit) and should save time when you would usually go grocery shopping, like on the weekend. The weekend can now be about you and your family instead of dreaded errands.
6. If you do not do this already, try packing your lunch instead of going out to lunch every day. This allows you to eat on the go if you have errands that you need to run, an appointment to get to or to workout. Having lunch out is nice and sometimes great for networking, but it will save you time and money to pack your lunch on most days. Try this for at least a week, and treat yourself to lunch out on Friday(s).
Of course each of our lives is different so you may only be able to use a few of these tips, but I hope you can make enough time for yourself.
Pamper yourself. You deserve it. Have a fabulous day every day!

The Art of Style
Art evokes emotions. Some are happy and others are sad. Some are disturbing and others are pleasant. Similarly, fashion and style evoke emotions as well. You know that feeling when you put on your favorite outfit and you feel like a movie star? Well, what if you could get that feeling every day? Wouldn't you want to make that feeling last as long as it could? (How could feeling and looking amazing ever get old?)
Yes, everyone has his or her own style (whether you own it yet or not). The originality (art) of style and fashion is part of what makes getting dressed so much fun for many of us. However, I realize that some of you may not enjoy getting dressed or even looking through your own closet yet. This may mean that you have yet to discover the beauty in your clothes and/or in yourself. Maybe you still are not certain what your style is or how to find it. Maybe you feel like you just do not have time to figure these things out. Maybe you still do not make your style or yourself a priority. Whatever your reasons, you CAN 'make' time for yourself. In fact, it is imperative that you take time for yourself to figure out what your style is and what it says about you.
How do others perceive you? Truthfully, it DOES matter what your boss thinks of you and how your family and friends see you. Most importantly, it matters how you feel with yourself and the way you present yourself to others. Are you happy with what you see in the mirror? Are you happy with what others see? Are you confident in a room full of people (what about complete strangers)? It is important to reflect upon your feelings and your answers to the above questions. It is my hope that as you read these blogs you will take with confidence, optimism and the belief in yourself that you can achieve the style and life of which you have always dreamed. I hope that you continue to take care of yourself and give yourself what you deserve.
Everyone deserves a little pampering. For those of you who need some extra encouraging, pampering is important for many reasons. Pampering yourself or getting pampered (however you define 'pampering') can help you improve your mood, attitude, concentration and your overall well-being and health. The more you smile, the better you will feel. Having a style that you are proud to present will make you smile so much more than you already do.
The key is to find what makes you happy.
Let us start with happiness as it relates to your style. Does a certain color, fit, texture, fabric, accessory or other item get you smiling? What makes you feel sexy and confident? When do you feel your best? What is your favorite piece of clothing and why? Thinking about these things will help you understand why you feel the way you do about your style, your closet, your life and yourself. I am not saying that you should dream about fashion or drool over the latest trends, but I am saying that when you wake up each morning, you should feel fabulous and look amazing before you ever step out of your home. Style is a key factor in this equation. Waking up excited to get dressed will make you feel excited about the day ahead. You will be happier and more comfortable and confident with yourself. Because you will feel better and will have a happier start to each day, the work day should not seem as draining and boring. Afterall, you now look more divine than ever and feel even more fantastic, right?
If you have any questions, comments, stories you would like to share or would like to schedule an appointment with me, please email me at cs.stylelife@yahoo.com, call me at 618-401-1434 or leave a comment below this article. Thank you, and I look forward to working with you!

Cutesygirl Rocks!
Cutesygirl.com is officially one of my favorite online shoe stores for women of most ages, at least those with young-at-heart fashionista attitudes. Cutesygirl.com offers a wide variety of shoes and a (less varied) collection of accessories and clothing. My favorite aspect of the online store is definitely the shoe department because the shoes are stylish. They complemement many styles, and they are affordable.
Cutesygirl.com offers amazing sale prices and complimentary shipping on purchases over $50. WOW! I can buy 3, 4, even 5 pairs of shoes for $50 from cutesygirl.com. That's what I call amazing! This website is tried and true. I have ordered from them twice so far. I received both orders (each with multiple pairs of shoes at once) in one week from the order date. I highly recommend cutesygirl.com to any fashionista who would like to expand her wardrobe with some stylish heels, wedges and/or flats without breaking the bank.
I have not ordered clothing or accessories from the site yet, but I do intend to in the near future. I saw that a pair of Cutesygirl sunglasses were featured in a popular magazine this past month. I hope to hear from all of you about your experiences with cutesygirl.com. :)
For the record, I am NOT a representative of Cutesygirl. I just really love shopping with cutesygirl.com and have had really great experiences with the company.

A Passion for Style
Hi, I am Catherine Burk. I am a self-employed StyleLife Consultant living in Edwardsville, IL. I am willing to travel outside the area for some clients, so don't hesitate to ask how far I will travel to help you. :)
I have a very deep passion for style, fashion and makeup. I LOVE helping other people explore styles and helping them find what fits them perfectly. My joy is showing people that everyone can feel amazing and look fabulous with the proper style tricks, tips and tools.
As a young girl, I learned how important it is to always look one's best. Whether we like it or not, others do judge us based upon first impressions, which usually means people evaluate us based on our looks initially. There is good news though because it is really quite simple to achieve an amazing style that speaks positive volumes. This is where I love to step in! I love teaching my clients to think creatively, optimistically AND realistically about their bodies, clothes, colors, cuts and fabric patterns.
Style and fashion are about having fun, showing your personality, finding functionality and loving how you look and feel! Getting ready (outfit selection, makeup application, accessories selection, etc.) is my FAVORITE part of the day, and it could be one of yours too. Just imagine how great it would feel to LOVE getting ready and to get dressed in clothes that make you feel like a million bucks... Ah, the sweet life can be yours TODAY!
As you might be able to tell already, I get very excited about helping my clients see their true beauty and style potential, guys and girls alike. I have had many years of training starting with my wonderful mother who taught me so much of what I know today about style and makeup. I went to college and received a bachelor's degree, all the while igniting my passion for fashion. I am currently working on several design lines and a style secrets book (which should be available online soon).
I have always had the passion to look my best, but more than that, I have always had the passion to feel my best. I find that the two correlate very heavily. Here is where my technique comes into play... Beyond wanting you to LOOK great, my goal is to help you FEEL great! Once we have accomplished both of those, you can accomplish anything!
My StyleLife approach is fun, helpful and professional. I love working with everyone- all ages, all shapes, all sizes- guys, girls, men, women... I just want to help you help yourself! If you are interested in learning more about my StyleLife consultations or scheduling an appointment today, please email me at cs.stylelife@yahoo.com or call me at (618) 401-1434. Thank you, and I look forward to working with you!

It just takes a little time, patience and a good attitude to objectively evaluate your style situation and to figure out whether you would like to hire a style consultant to help you through this process, which can be very overwhelming and stressful if you go at it alone. If you choose not to hire professional, ask a trusted friend his or her honest opinions about your wardrobe. (Brace yourself, and remember you did ask for the truth... They are only trying to help you be the best possible you!)
The many advantages to hiring a professional include fresh perspectives, additional creativity with clothes you already own, objective style and personality matching, a passion for style, fashion and makeup and an extra hand to hold through the whole process. Imagine how MUCH better you will feel AND look after you take charge of your closet!
After you hire a professional, your style process will begin! We will sift through your clothes, organize your closet and explore new styles for you together, as a team. This process really is so much more fun when you work as a team! You will be surprised how much better you feel, how much more energy you have and how much more fabulous you look all because of an improved style!!! When will you schedule your appointment?

De-clutter Your Closet
Turn your chaotic closet into a beautiful boudoir.
The seemingly mundane task of cleaning out a closet may not sound like the most fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon, but think about the results... Wouldn't it be nice to see every item of clothing in your closet? Wouldn't it be nice to be able to pick out an outfit in less than 10 minutes each day? Wouldn't it be nice to feel happy while picking out outfits and getting dressed every day? Well, this is all possible IF you de-clutter your closet.
A. The first step to the closet de-clutter process is to physically remove the clutter from your closet. Take out everything! (This will make a mess... but soon the whole closet and your room will provide you with a fabulous feeling and an inspirational room for dressing.)
B. Keep four laundry baskets, bags or boxes handy to sort your clothes.
1. Keep *Put aside as these items will be organized shortly.
2. Donate *Goodwill, Salvation Army, friends or someone in need
3. Cherish *This should be used only as a last resort and/or for keeping for kids. There should be VERY few items in this bin.
4. Alter *Hire a tailor or alter the clothes yourself to make clothing more 'fitting' to your body.
C. When deciding which category to send your clothes, ask yourself the following questions:
1. Does the item FIT well? (Remember sizes vary across the board.)
2. Is the item FLATTERING on your figure from all angles? *Use a tri-fold mirror to check.
3. Is the item functional? Can you sit, stand, walk and bend over, etc. in the item?
4. Is the item classic or trendy, timeless or outdated?
5. Is the item in a complementary color?
6. What is your comfort level in the piece?
7. Would you rate this piece of clothing at an 8.5 or higher (on a 10 point scale)?
8. Does this item coordinate with clothes and accessories that you already own?
9. Where can you wear this item? Will you really wear this item within the next 3 months?
10. Does this piece of clothing 'fit' within your defined style?
11. How do you feel in this piece of clothing?
12. Does the piece still look new, or is it tattered or faded?
Pick out the clothes that are not worn (or should not be worn) by you and place these items in the appropriate bins (Donate, Cherish or Alter). *Ask a friend for his/her opinion or hire a style consultant for objective, expert advice.
D. Once all of your clothes are placed in appropriate categories, take out all of the 'Keep' items and organize them into sub-categories: pants [dress, casual, weekend], suits, tops [dress, casual, weekend], (dresses [formal, casual, professional, etc.]), (skirts [dress, casual, weekend])... You can even further organize by color, fabric, etc. Find what works best for you!
E. Put clothes on matching hangers (color coded, all wooden or fabric covered).
F. Use boxes/ baskets for classy storage for smaller items.
G. Have fun and love getting dressed every day!
It will make for a very easy selection process when your closet is organized.
Extra TIP: Select outfits for the next week to save time in your busy morning. Even include accessories and shoes to make getting dressed even easier and faster.

Winter Style Maintenance
Because the weather is so radical lately, it does make maintaining one's style a little challenging. No worries though because you're fabulous, and I have more sanity-saving tips! :)
Because the weather is extra dry, you and your clothes will produce more static electricity. I recommend using a static prevention/ anti-cling formula, even hair spray would work on your clothes. If using hair spray, just spray a very fine mist on the area of concern (spray on the inside or reverse side of the fabric, rather than the side that is meant to be revealed). If using Static Guard or other anti-static/cling, follow the directions on the bottle. Carry extra formula/ hair spray in your bag just in case you need it later.
Of course your smile is very important to your style. So keep your lips moisturized! This tip is even more important at this time of year. Chapped lips are not only distracting, but they can also be painful. Prevention is the best method here. (The same goes for your hands, feet and the rest of your body!) Remember, stay hydrated!
Coffee drinking is one way to warm up this chilly season, but don't forget to brush after you drink coffee (or soda). This is a good way to help prevent the discoloration or staining of your teeth. Also, Crest Whitestrips are amazing. If you really must drink lots of coffee, use these strips as indicated on the box, and voila, fabulous white smile!
Does it seem like every piece of dust, fur, hair and lint in the air is gathering on your outfit? Carry a small lint brush or roller with you, and brush/roll as necessary. This tip will help keep your outfit looking fresh.
Ladies, so you can't wear your normal shoes because there's too much snow? It's a good thing boots are h-o-t! You can pair boots with so many outfits and styles that you should easily be able to find a pair of boots that matches your style and needs. If you must wear heels or some other type of shoe to work, try wearing boots until you get to work, and change once you're at your desk. This way you'll keep your shoes nice and your feet warm.
It's colder than usual, and you still need to look professional. Layering your clothes is very important this time of year. As your needs change during the day, you can take off layers or add layers. You can achieve so many great, classic (or trendy) looks with layering. For example, try a collared button-down under a nice sweater. Add a blazer on top. How chic!
I hope these tips come in handy! If you have any questions, comments or would like to book an appointment, please let me know by emailing me at the address at the top right corner of this blog page. Thank you, and enjoy your day!

Your Resolution
So you have a New Year's resolution, just like every other year... only this year you vow to stick to it, right? It's tough to stick to some of our resolutions, like saving money, losing weight, organizing the home, etc. BUT all of these goals can be accomplished with focus~ think about what you want to accomplish first, then ACT upon it! This year is your year!
THINK.
1. Is your resolution realistic?
2. How will it affect others? (Stay away from ones that may be harmful to you or others.)
3. Why did you make this particular resolution?
4. What will you gain from sticking to this resolution?
5. How can you stay focused on achieving your goal?
6. Do you have a support system to help you?
7. What will you do to maintain your resolution?
ACT.
1. Personal time. Set aside time each day to focus on your resolution (without interruptions).
2. Remind yourself WHY your goal is so important to you.
3. Reward yourself. For each day of progress, reward yourself with something special.
4. Make fun. Your resolution activity should seem fun so you will stick to it.
5. The more progress you make the easier it will be to stick to your resolution for a longer period of time. Keep up the great work!!!
6. Believe in yourself!!! You can accomplish what you desire! It just takes some work, some fun and a lot of focus! :)
