A SMART GUY

"Dost thou love life?
Then do not squander time; for that's the stuff life is made of."

-- Benjamin Franklin

He's a pretty smart dude.
Maybe he's right.
Happy New Year!

THIS IS MY NEW YEAR... on crack.

Does anyone else remember the "2000" glasses that were around for Y2K and 1999 NYE?? Because I sure do. My pair glowed in the dark and were passed out during a NYE party during my middle school days in Nevada.

Between 2000 and tonight, the night before 2010, my life has definitely had some changes.

2001: I decided to leave my mother and my home in order to have the opportunity for a better life.

2005: I improved my grades, (for the first time) made amazing life-long friends, successfully graduated high school and was accepted into college.

2005-2009: I attended college, began playing rugby, made even more 'keeper' friends, fell in love, found out who my true friends were, was accepted into a new family, welcomed a new set in in-laws, decided to postpone graduate school for a 'real' job, and had my heart broken.

2010: Will bring my graduation from college (Jan. 10) and will begin the start of a new chapter in my life. One that will hopefully lead to a new career and the completion of the goals that I set for myself so long ago.

This evening I will be spending the night alone.
No parties, no more boyfriend, and no friends tonight.
Kind of lame... no, really it is lame. But I'm okay it with it. I'm going to finally sit back and truly relax. I've spend the last 8 years (since moving to Maryland) working my ass off to get this far. Tonight will be my break. Tomorrow I will begin the next part of my life and I plan on enjoying it every step of the way.

This year:
January has me graduating. Going on a ski trip (for the first time) with friends from home. Possibly going on a 2 day trip to Vegas with my cop friends or just another over night-er to Atlantic City.
February I start a new job, not a 'real job just an in-between job, close to home. Then I'm going (possibly back) to Vegas for a 4 day weekend of out of control, craziness with my rugby team for the USA 7's tournament. I'm going to catch up with the only 2 friends I've kept from NV. And I plan on having the time of my life with a bunch of amazing ladies--an enjoying the eye-candy that are sexy rugby men (haha)!
I don't know what I have in store for March, April, May, or June, but July is my Birthday and August is bringing my brother and his wife baby #2 (child #4). (I'm planning on it being a girl. It better be a girl.)
I really just hope that this year, and the years following the end of my undergraduate/college career will be good. I just want to be happy. That's all I've ever really asked for, and that's what my resolution this year will be.

I just want to be happy.

If I were on stage in a Miss America Pageant I'd wish for World Peace too.

:)

Have a Happy New Year everyone.
Be safe.

Chuck.

Gravity, my enemy

Darn gravity, my face is falling! I was always a fan of gravity, keeping us from spinning away into space, until I turned 40 and my face started heading south! I feel like John Mayer wrote this song about me...

"Gravity is working against me. And gravity wants to bring me down... Oh gravity, stay the hell away from me..."

It is a really good song and a sad, sad situation.

WHY NOT TO GO TO THE MALL AFTER CHRISTMAS

I'm still waiting to begin my Adventures in Literary-land, but shipping is taking longer than normal. Damn the holidays!

In the mean time I made my rounds at the mall Monday night... my intention was to make a SIMPLE return at H&M and then drive home. HOWEVER the DOUCHE at the register, who must have been new, because I unfortunately know all of the people who work there due to my inability to properly hang onto any 'spare' cash in my wallet... and well, he was not a regular employee... he was A DOUCHE!

I walked in, the beepy alarm went off, I walked to the register, patiently waited my turn, approached the register and stated that I needed to make a return (something that I've done before--with no problems). As I emptied my H&M bag, filled with 2 H&M garments AND the original, in damn near mint condition, receipt I informed the Register DOUCHE that one sweater still had the security tag/plastic-do-hicky attached to it. Well this tid bit piece of what I assumed to be helpful information must have set the RD (Register DOUCHE--remember) off into a tizzy!

He flipped his shit (excuse my excessive use of DOUCHE and explicit language)!

RD: "Well where did you get this from? Which H&M did you buy this from, because you didn't get it here."
ME: "I purchased it here. It actually has happened more than once to me--that the security thing has been left on--it's common."
RD: "No it's not. We don't leave those on."
ME: "Yes, it's happened before. Here."
RD: "Well how did you get out of the store with this?"

At this point he pulls the receipt up close to his face, along with the tag for the sweater, and checks the barcode... number by number... I know he is doing this because I can see his lips counting off and verifying the numbers and his big DOUCHEY head going back and forth between the two items.

ME: "I got from this store."

What I didn't say at this point was: Hey DOUCHE BAG! Did you even LOOK UP AT ME when I walked INTO the store carrying this bag when the ALARM WENT OFF? No you did not. Neither did any other member of the staff when I walked in--as other customers were walking out. What if they were stealing something?? Hmm!?

But, I didn't say that. I kept my cool--surprisingly (it's a new thing I'm trying). I didn't even get smart-assy when he made his initial DOUCHEY comments to me. I didn't roll my eyes, OR raise my eyebrow. I swear.

I even kept my cool when he took the second garment and proceeded to inspect it and it's barcode in comparision to the receipt. I even kept my cool when I heard him mumbling about how the price was "INCORRECT" on the receipt for the second garment that was a sale item. I mean seriously DOUCHE, WTF??

RD: "Do you have your Visa on you? The one ending in ****."
ME: "Yes."
RD: "Well I need you to have it out in order to credit you back your money."
ME: "Okay." pulling it out
RD: "You need to swipe it."

The rest of the interaction is moot... but that guy was a serious DOUCHE. I have NEVER had problems with my H&M. Not with their store, nor their staff. I understand that this was the Monday after the holiday, but really? Was it necessary for him to be so RUDE?

So I left H&M with a credit to my account :) and headed to Anthropologie (DUMB idea) on my way out the door.

I ended up buying three ornaments on sale, I bought two for my collection, and one for my lovely friend Stacey and her husband to be Steve--for their first tree together.

[Stacey & Steve--July 30, 2010--Can't wait to be a MOH!!]

I also happened to find THE PERFECT DRESS for their rehearsal dinner at Anthropologie. But of course I must wait for it to go on sale. Because it's Anthro, and their crap, although beautiful, is just too damn pricey.

[Cosgrove Dress -- $128]

I tried on both the red and the blue... and I think I am leaning toward the red. I am thinking about a black belt (possibly) and then my black flats or the black peep toes I just picked up for graduation (!!). But I'll decide after I get the dress (after it goes on sale).

I found this necklace online. It looks like it would go with the look I want to try and pull off. If it doesn't go on sale it's okay. I could try a DIY bib necklace, or just grab one from F21. No biggie on accessories. Summer is months away.

OOh. I don't mean for this to be a long post:

However... I found this at Anthropologie as well. I WOULD NEVER pay the price that is being asked for this item, but I did and do think that the whole product overall is just neat.

It's a wooden puzzle. I don't like the image and the cheesy "can you imagine," but I do like puzzles and the crazy, crafted, intricate wooden pieces are really cool. I wish it were a little bigger as well, especially for the cost. The website has a few more pictures. Check it out.

I tried to find similar online and for CHEAPER but I was unlucky. If someone has any luck, or knows of something similar--craftsmanship wise, let me know. I would love this for me personally, but I know a few friends and family who would love something like this as a gift.

I hope you all have recovered from your holidays, and are priming up for New Years--does anyone have any plans yet? Everyone I know is basically in the though process of "we'll find out the night before"... oh well whatever works. I know I just want to have a blast this year!

New Books

I have two new books to add to my library, thank you Mom and Debbie/David for these.

The first book is about art and business in the contemporary art world, with profiles of artists, dealers, critics, and collectors. I'm starting this one tonight.

The second book is...

Little Felted Animals, how to needle felt tiny animals. I have seen a few needle felted birds on Etsy that I want. My mom decided to get me this book so I can make my own! I made a cardinal tonight, it's not perfect but I plan to go to Yarn Dogs tomorrow (a store that has needle felting supplies) and get some advice. I will post my bird after I purchase and add the eyes.

LIBRARY LUST

Yes I wrote LUST and not LIST... it's because I am a self prescribed library nerd who loves to read in her spare time. It's quite disgusting actually. I get so wrapped up in the books that I read that I just have to finish them completely before I can put them down. Like I said, it's gross.

Since college is FINALLY FINITO! I am finally left with this huge gap of free time... in between work of course... So in the next few days I plan to make my usual trip to the library, which will ultimately lead to a large amount of library fines, but will keep me entertained for about a month, just until the fines start accumulating and I get off my ass and return the books just so I can pick up more.

The Library Lust List:
(It will grow as the weeks go on... don't you worry)

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
I have heard nothing but positive reviews of this book. I also heard that a few people who were going through transitions in their lives found this to be a good read while doing so. I hope that it has the same effect of me.

Dimitri got this for me on my 21st and I have yet to crack the damn thing open.. Honestly, it's been on my 'to read' list since high school, and when D gave it to me I was elated, but just never picked it up to read. This coming January it will definitely be in my top 3 to complete.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
This was actually a recommendation by Stephen from 20 Something Bloggers. I'm excited to read this after reading the wiki page. Supposedly the book is being made into a movie with Keira Knightly; she didn't do much for me in Atonement--by the way, THE BOOK IS SO FRIGGIN BETTER, so I should definitely check this out before previews start making the rounds and stray me away from crackin' it open.

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
This has been on my to-read list for at least a year. For some reason I just haven't gotten around to it. I saw a preview today for it's movie version and it looked promising. My goal is to have it read before the movie comes out in theaters this January.

The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
This was on my Amazon wishlist. I don't quite remember where I found it or why it's on my list, but I'm definitely going to add it to my list of books to read. This one will most likely be a MAYBE book--because I really just don't remember anything about it.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy
I saw previews for this book's movie version and I found myself more intrgued by the book. It's had amazing reviews and won tons of awards. I am definitely looking forward to getting to this one.

Finally, the next two books are two that I found while browsing a book shop in Ireland. I wrote down the titles and am now finally planning to read them.

These should keep me entertained until books by my regular authors come out. Hopefully...

Currently I am reading:
I'm under 80 pages in, I just picked it up for a few hours last night, and I am not quite sure how I feel about it yet. Don't know if I want to continue or just stop now and grab another. I plan on picking it up again tonight. I might skim through the next few pages to see if it gets any better. I hope so.

Happy Christmas everyone!
I hope you had a happy holiday!

MUSICAL TEACHINGS PASSED FROM ONE TO ANOTHER

I just stumbled across the Biased Cut blog and discovered that they have ridiculously good taste in music, I think a few people I would would appreciate the link. They feature videos and links to free (legit) downloads to their song choices.

I definitely recommend checking them out.

Also, if you're interested (to male readers) they just opened their online store for custom fit/tailored menswear shirts and are offering $30 off your first shirt (originally $85). This seams like a great deal if you're a guy who struggles to find work shirts in your size. Plus, paying $55 as opposed to $85 for a tailored shirt seems to be a pretty damn good deal.
Here is a clip from the blog regarding the shirts:
combining the best of classic fashion and new trends, superior craftsmanship and quality, and a custom fit – all at a very reasonable price.
Sounds legit to me. But then again I'm not in need of menswear shirts, BUT if I were, I would jump on this. Nothing wrong with trying it out once and seeing if their product is what it claims to be... especially with the $30 off deal.

Like I said, check out the blog and the store site as well: Biased Cut.

Here is a video from the blog, and actually a song I've heard before thanks to Pandora or c0mmunicate... can't remember which one, but I'm pretty sure I heard it first through c0mmunicate's eclectic musical collection.

Julian Casablancas - 11th Dimension

Also featured on the Biased Cut blog were two artists I really enjoy thanks to the musical teachings of a friend... Yeasayer and Phoenix.

Eh, just for the heck of it... here is a Phoenix video.

I highly recommend checking Yeasayer and Phoenix out today!!
Do it... you can thank me later.

RUNNING LATE

Well Christmas is two days away... I mean one day now that it's 12:00am. This year due to some setbacks and some procrastination I did not send out ANY Christmas/Holiday cards. However, I did manage to fill out all of my Graduation Announcements! and will have them all ready to be sent out the day after Christmas... but that still does not make up for the fact that I completely slacked at Christmas this year.

:(

I was browsing through Etsy.com this evening and found these suckers which will definitely be coming home to me soon so that I may have them ready for NEXT year's holiday season. Is that pathetic or what?

I love how simple these are... definitely my style and I think the perfect card for my friends and family next year.

Go check out Hello Harbor's store for other great items... Just don't buy ALL of their stock of cards, I need some for my set to send out next year!

Here is a snip from the HH shop:
Hello Harbor specializes in personalized stationery, custom invitations, calling cards, greeting cards and other paper goods. Every piece is designed, printed, cut and folded in house. I strive very hard for high quality custom items and great customer service.

Hello Harbor will be debuting its line of 2010 Wedding Invitations in January!
Did I mention that the holiday cards also come with envelopes!? (You could probably tell by the image above) And that the HH shop has a blog? Hello Harbor Look at me giving the HH an abbreviated name like we're school girl bffs...

Clearly I'm out of it this evening.

Someone shoot me please, I'm running on 3 hours of sleep and clearly I'm a bit too easily excited right now, excuse me. I promise to never get this out of hand again.

(Well maybe not 'promise' but I'll make a conscious effort to try to tone it down)

OOH LOOK!

Go check out the blog Pomegranate and Patchouli... they are having a giveaway for an...

Orient Japan 50M water resistant men’s style watch with scratch resistant mineral crystal, a stainless steel case and Japanese design engineering

It's a great blog with tons of giveaways each month. I promise you'll love it!

Go, Go Now!!
